Internet of Things

What Is the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the connection of machines, meters, vehicles and sensors to the internet so that they produce data and can be managed remotely. The vibration of a motor on a production line, the temperature of a warehouse or the location of a vehicle can all be monitored as it happens. Faults are noticed before they occur and intervention becomes planned rather than reactive.

Why Invest in IoT?

Fixing a fault after it happens is always more expensive than detecting it in advance. When data flows continuously from field equipment, the maintenance schedule rests on measurement rather than estimation; unplanned downtime falls, energy consumption becomes visible and resources are used more efficiently. When automatic, reliable data replaces hand-kept records, the reporting burden disappears as well.

How Is an IoT Project Set Up?

We first establish which data will be collected from which equipment and which decision that data will support. Starting with a limited set of indicators that genuinely make a difference in the plant, rather than measuring everything, both speeds up the project and makes the return on investment visible sooner.

We then select suitable sensors and a communication method and build the infrastructure that gathers data from the field. While data accumulates on a central platform, alarm rules are defined for conditions that cross a threshold. Your team can follow the live state through web and mobile interfaces and go back through historical data to examine trends.

Predictive Maintenance

Predictive maintenance is the forecasting of a fault by evaluating vibration, temperature and current data from equipment together with historical failure records. Instead of servicing to a fixed calendar, intervention happens when it is genuinely needed. This lowers unnecessary maintenance cost and prevents the damage unexpected downtime does to the production plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

+
-
Can IoT be added to our existing machines?

In most cases yes. If the machine itself has no digital output, externally fitted sensors can collect vibration, temperature, current or meter data. Replacing the machine is not necessary. During the site survey we inspect your equipment in place and report which data can be captured by which method.

+
-
What if there is no internet connection on site?

Wired internet is not the only option. Depending on the environment, Wi-Fi, mobile networks or long-range low-power wireless technologies can be used. Where connectivity is intermittent, devices store data locally and transmit it once the connection returns, so no measurement is lost.

+
-
Where is the collected data stored?

It can be stored on your own server or in the cloud, as you prefer. For businesses that do not want production data leaving the organisation we build a fully on-premises installation. In both cases data access is restricted by user role and connections are encrypted.

+
-
How quickly does the investment pay back?

That depends on the downtime prevented and how critical the equipment is. On production lines where an hour of unplanned downtime is expensive, payback is usually under a year. Before starting we work through your current downtime and maintenance costs with you and set out the expected gain in concrete figures.
